This is a partial scanning of a painting from Pieter Aertsen, called the Pancake Bakery, which shows pancakes and waffles. There is a date in the painting indicating that this is from at least 1560. I have not found this painting anywhere online from a museum or art site. This copy came from a book on 16th century Dutch costuming called "The Well Dress'd Peasant", by Drea Leed. There is another copy of this painting in an historical cookbook called, "The Joy of Eating", by Katie Stewart. Unfortunately, Ms. Stewart neither gave the name of the painting nor the painter. It was not until Ms. Leed's book that I found out that information. There are other Dutch paintings from Aertsen and from Joachim Beuckelaer, showing waffles either already made or in the process of being made. There are several other Dutch artists who have shown waffles. This painting from Aertsen is the only one that I know of that also shows pancakes. |
